SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF ASTANA IN JANUARY-AUGUST 2011: BRIEF SUMMARY
Astana, the City of Dynamic Development

The primary objective for Astana development for the period till 2014 is to raise the living standards of its residents based on sustainable social and economic development. The following tasks were set to meet this objective: further development of the Industrial Park and implementation of investment projects, strengthening of small and medium business within the municipal economy through development of the government-private partnership, organisation of fairs and exhibitions, reduction of inflation rate, further implementation of the housing programme, improvement of educational system and better health services as part of further development of educational, research and medical clusters, implementation of a package of measures targeted at closer intercommunion with employers, trade unions and non-governmental organisations of the capital to exclude unjustified job cuts and latent unemployment and taking actions to ensure social protection of redundant employees.

The population of Astana is 720,000.

NATIONAL ECONOMY

According to preliminary information, current price gross regional product in Q1 2011 is KZT 414,449.6 million with 8.0% of Astana share in the national GDP.

Capital investments in January-August 2011 totalled KZT 292,920.5 million (125.0% as compared to January-August 2010). 919,604 square meters of housing (with 695,824 square meters of usable apartment space) financed from different sources were commissioned (99.0% as compared to January-August 2010).

The number of registered legal entities (commercial entities) in Astana as of 1 September 2011 is 32,282, including 18,351 operating companies. Of all operating legal entities, 17,481 are small business enterprises.

Small and medium business enterprises. The output of goods, works and services by the operating small and medium business enterprises in January-August 2011 totalled KZT 568,762 million (or 100.7% as compared to January-August 2010). The number of operating small and medium business enterprises as of 1 September 2011 is 37,444 (or by 51.0% higher as compared to in January-August 2010). The number of people employed by small and medium business enterprises as of 1 September 2011 was 146,200 (or by 3.4% higher than as of 1 September 2010).

TRADE

Retail turnover (except for public catering services) in January-August 2011 was KZT 209,603 million, which is by 11.6% higher than in January-August 2010 in comparable prices.

The capital has close trade relations with about 90 counties and also with twin capitals, such as Moscow, Minsk, Kishinev, Seoul, Riga, Warsaw, Budapest, Baku, Cairo, Bangkok, Berlin, Vilnius, Ankara, Amman, Tashkent, Beijing, and others.

REAL ECONOMY

Industrial output in effective prices in January-August 2011 totalled KZT 102,572.1 million, with the production physical volume index making up 133.9% as compared to January-August 2010, and increased as follows:
in processing industry – by 1.5 times higher than in January-August 2010,
in water supply, sewage and refuse collection and distribution services – by 10.9%, and
in electricity, steam and gas supply and air conditioning – by 0.8%.
